High Strength Alloys

Tool steels are high hardness, abrasion resistant steels. Due to these properties, we apply them in Die Attach tooling that requires a high wear resistance. These properties are achieved by the formation of carbides within the matrix. The carbides are much harder than the surrounding matrix material, giving tool steels additional wear resistance as compared to normal steels.

The major alloying elements that form carbides in tool steel are tungsten, chromium, vanadium and molybdenum. There are several different families of tool steel: water-hardening, cold-working, shock-resisting, high-speed and hot-working. Each group has different properties such as hardness or service temperature. For example, hot-working tool steels are designed for use at high temperatures. Water-hardened steels are water quenched to obtain high levels of hardness, however with a corresponding increase in fragility. Depending on your Pick Up or Bonding application, we offer various grades of Tool steels to help you achieve your process requirements.
Tool steels are widely used in Wire Bonding Tools, especially in Holding Anvil Blocks, Window Clamp Inserts and Heat Block Inserts.
Hot-working tool steel have a carbon content of 0.35% – 0.45% and a chromium content of 6% – 25%. These steels are suitable for applications with operating temperatures in the range of 480 to 760 °C. in temperatures of 480 to 760°C. Hot- working tool steels from the list in this group are: Mirrax® 40, Stavax® and Rammax® HH.
